I will be helping the University of Central Missouri to find out what kind of genres the students prefer to watch. My second research question is “What outlets, platforms or mediums reach people more at UCM?”. I have chosen three journal articles to help me with my research. The first is “Does genre type influence choice of video platform? A study of college student use of internet and television for specific video genres” by Jiyoung Cha. This article talks about how recently we are exposed to many forms of media outlets. It is just not television but how we chose satellite, cable or dial-up. We do not have to wait anymore for the shows that we like to watch and see them only once a week. Watching shows has spread to online streaming and with this a choice. This choice is just not how to view a show but how people want to view their favorite genres on specific platforms. Some genres are more popular on online streaming and some are favorited better for standard television. University students were surveyed about how certain genres are performed on different outlets. I thought that this article would relate to my research because maybe the network could base how they would like to direct some genres of their shows depending on what works for television. Maybe the University of Central Missouri could also think about creating online streaming services or YouTube shows. This popularity of online streaming had to lead me to my second article. This is “To Binge or Not to Binge: A Qualitative Analysis of College Students’ Binge-Watching Habits” by Theodore G. Petersen. It talks about the obviousness of millennials and their use of online streaming. We know of the popularity among most college students. It also touches on people who have for years have paid for cable and satellite subscriptions and have chosen to move to online streaming. People find it easier for their schedules. They also find it cheaper to use with more variety. Most people I know in or out of college have an online streaming service. This idea of online streaming for a show could boost popularity in UCM’s media programming and increase enrollment. If more people have access to these shows from UCM then they might want to come to the school. “TV Genres Re-viewed” touches on what kind of genres always work, catches people’s attention and why. It talks about television shows that are shown in the United States and in Great Britain. Creating a show takes a formula to put the right components that people usually enjoy together over again in new fashions. This includes combing styles from different genres together or recreating a show for another country. Figuring what will engage more views is the key to creating and popularizing the shows. Semantic Differential Scale will be used for my research and open-ended questions. I will ask people what kind of genres they like on the scale from one to five. One being disliked and five being love. My open-ended questions will be what kind of outlets do they watch TV or if they watch TV at all. Some strengths can gauge several people that like a certain type of genre and how they watch them. A setback could be the lack of people’s access to outlets and time that they have to watch television. I will choose 100 students to participate in the research. I want to advertise it in the University’s newspapers and newsletters and University’s social media. This is so I can reach people that already keep up with UCM’s media. At the same time, I do not want to have any people who are involved in the production of shows or media courses. This is to have a basis for people who are not fully a part of the school’s media. There are no ethical concerns.
