Working in Community Development

I am interested in working with a Community Based Organization that has a goal to assist underserved people to create more productive and sustainable lives for themselves. Helping to build and strengthen community institutions and tell people’s stories through writing and various communication mediums are goals I hope to continue and improve on throughout my life. I would like to utilize my skills in project management to create and establish programs for community outreach and awareness of social issues. Education is a skill that I would like to use to continue teaching and training on much-needed topics. My core strengths are being resourceful, paying attention to detail, and interpersonal communication skills.

Volunteering in Malawi, Africa I had lived with people in extreme poverty. Being a teacher I also was involved in being a student organization advisor, and counselor. Improving the teaching staff’s skills by introducing methods and materials. Outside of school, I had worked with NGO’s and Community Based Organizations to focus on community issues. Together we created and supported development projects that provided food, help weigh and document statuses of malnourished children and educate community members on HIV/AIDs and Malaria.

Helping to build and strengthen community institutions is a goal that I hope to continue. I would like to establish sustainable resources such as improved programs, resource materials and groups led by community members that are empowered in making a change. Establishing sustainable resources is important to the growth of communities that are impacted by inequity. I come from a community like this and it could be different. It can be different by people caring, protecting and being knowledgeable about it being possible to have better.

I would like to better improve a community now in the country that I come from. Helping others is something that has so much meaning to my life. Working with others to produce work that helps and contributes to others is what is meaningful to me. Understanding people holistically help me learn more about who I am as a person.
