The network that I will be pitching my program to is the Columbia Broadcasting Station. It fits with the image of the network by presenting newer shows that present younger characters. These characters are usually in their twenties. This helps in growing the popularity of the network by expanding more to a millennial audience. It will create a more inclusive atmosphere for, viewers of different ages.
Shows that have followed in this trend were “Two Broke Girls”, “Supergirl” and “Superior Donuts”. One of these shows is on the air as of now. This show is “Superior Donuts”. “Two Broke Girls” is neither canceled or renewed right now and “Supergirl” is now on The CW. There is a gap for more shows that reach younger audience members. This show can take a step in pulling in this younger crowd.
This network works with the show that I’ve created because it is a network that is easy to access since it is on basic cable networking stations. Working with this station and creating more relevant content for it can help to compete with streaming companies like Netflix and Hulu. These streaming companies have a large consumer group. The type of content that is shown on CBS should expand to reach more viewers. Whether they have cable or still want to stream content online they can hopefully feel like they have more options on what to watch.
The network claims that it is diverse. In the CBS corporation mission statement, it states that it wants to incorporate more diversity in the work that it does. “CBS Corporation and its divisions are committed to building an environment that values diversity throughout the corporation”. Most shows on CBS now have a majority white actors that are shown on the shows. With some shows having one African American or other minority lead there is room to show diversity.
Competing with other networks and online streaming means that the network will have to cater to a more multi-cultural audience. This show could indeed create a new medium for a more diverse audience. Showing the mission of the network through its programming can show viewers that many diverse backgrounds are included inside of the media of the company. The show that I have created gives the view of the lives of people in multiple ways at ones. In a new way from the usual programming.
The target audience of the network now seems to be the majority of a white audience. With most of its shows that depict mostly white main characters and a small amount of other minority main characters. The focus of the show that I am presenting does not erase the presence of white characters. It introduces them in a similar or more satirical way to reflect how minorities are seen in mainstream shows.
The target audience of the show that is being presented will be from multiple groups of people. These include the white audience who already watch the shows on CBS, attracting a bigger audience of African-Americans as well as a more conscious audience of white people who see an imbalance in what ethnicities and nationalities are shown on television today. This age range is twenty years old to thirty years old. The show still fits into the target audience by including a white person. This show could draw a more diverse audience because the cast will be mostly different from the usual majority cast if other shows on this network. It could draw more African-American audience members because of its majority cast being African-American.
The audience can learn that a show can be for anyone no matter the color of their skin. It does not have to be a “black show” only meant for African-Americans. Just like a show with mostly a white cast is not a white show, it’s just a regular show. This is just regular that is meant for everyone. It’s different from other shows because it makes fun of the common archetype of the token black character by presenting a token white character. Showing this concept for a show that is as normal as and accessible as many other shows with a white cast.
The unrepresented group that I have chosen is African-Americans. I have shown this group because they are sometimes outnumbered and made fun of in shows. I am supposed to watch these shows and feel comfortable able the race jokes that are being made in them. I wanted to create a show that has elements of what is considered a regular show and just changes the color and position of the characters.
They are usually presented in their shows which are seen as just shows for black people. Some shows with a black cast member-only have just that and no white best friend or third white friend. These are separate from other shows that have mostly white cast or just white cast but are marketed to anyone. This is problematic because people from other cultures should expose themselves to the lives of people from other cultures without those people being overly being stereotyped as too black or not black enough. By too black I mean aggressive, hoodlums, loud and dumb. By too white I mean to have money, successful, educated and just normal.
Seeing blacks as tokens on television is a problem as well. This makes blacks look like the unusual and being white as the norm. It seems like there is a quota on friends to feel. This requirement is to at least have one black friend. The friend that a white person has that is black they may feel like they can say whatever they want to that black friend or about black people in general and they get a pass because their friend is black. Everyone should learn more about a culture by immersing themselves in it not feeling like one person can show them everything about a different culture of people.
I think that this show will show people that we are all the same. No matter the color of our skin or our background, we are similar in so many ways. It will make people talk about the show and how it reflects issues that we see in media today. Hopefully talking about these issues and bringing awareness to them will push people to expect diversity. This will push people to want to become more involved and aware of the media they consume and makes them observe and question. Doing this instead of just being force food whatever.
I think a positive response to the show is that there is a show about young people and it relates to that generation. It is funny and uniquely sees the world. I think some people would complain about there not people more white people in the show.
The show will be a thirty-minute broadcast. It will be shown weekly. It is a sitcom. The name of the show is “Half and Half Brothers”. The show is about two brothers who are twins that were separated and given up for adoption at birth. They reunite later in their lives but find out that they are twin half-brothers. One is black and the other is white. They both did not find this out until they met. The white twin has now moved in with the black twin.
The name of the show is based on multiple concepts. One is like the product Half and Half, it’s a creamer that goes into coffee. Another is that the brothers are half-brothers. The third is that their twins so it’s like one is the other half of the other. The last is that the white brother has a black mother and white father.
The show just follows the day to day situations that they get into together. Doing this while creating a bond and making up for lost time. The show also takes place in their apartment. In the show, the white twin is more of a McGuffin. His face is unseen to the audience. He also does not have any speaking roles at all.
The major storylines of the show are all the characters adjusting to the new arrangement of these two brothers being together. The two brothers are learning more about each other and themselves. They must learn how to work together because they need each as a family.
There are four characters in the show. They are all in the same age range of twenty-one to twenty-four. There are two brothers. The African-American brother is Eric Half. The white brother is Derrick Half. There is Eric’s girlfriend Cloe. The supporting character is Eric’s roommate Sam.
The main character is Eric Half. Eric is a genealogist researcher. He was raised in foster care and never really knew any real family. With a sibling that he wants to connect with and his prejudice, he could change his views of the world.
Derrick Half, Eric’s newly found brother is kind of an eccentric person. He likes to play jokes but sometimes is very relaxed and has hobbies like gardening. The rest of his life will be a mystery. Throughout the airing of the show, clues will be left around the apartment about his life. These things are about his career, his background, and even his sexuality.
Eric’s girlfriend is Chloe. She is a pharmacist. She is very calm and keeps everyone together. She is very nurturing and understanding of other’s feelings. Chloe is not afraid to call Eric out when he is acting ridiculous. She is helping him be strong in this transition in his life.
Sam is Eric’s roommate. Sam smokes weed a lot of the time and is usually high. He is aware that she is a sitcom. Only Sam knows that they are in a sitcom and sometimes it annoys him.
This show is a new concept. Showing the lives of a mixed array twenty-somethings that are majority African-American as well one who is white. This concept reaches to two areas of focus from the type of audience that they want to reach. One that is young and one that is diverse. Showing more of a variety that depicts more people of a minority in the limelight. It pushes away from the typical major white shows but keeps what seems like the target audience still involved.
The show is original because it focuses on two twins with different fathers. This is not something usually people think about. It explores this concept. It also at the same time is showing the lives of siblings who are from two divergent backgrounds racial and how they deal with each other.
The show’s main characters being African-American and dealing with race and being exposed to a white counterpart helps him see that they are the same no matter his experiences with others. The show also just shows people just being people. On television, American-Americans are seen to be shown in two ways when there is a group of them. This show breaks away from those ideas. Instead of the typical token black, the show switches the idea by showing what could happen with a token white person.
They are not rich African-Americans trying to survive in a white world. They are also not African-Americans in an impoverished neighborhood living in danger. People who are exposed to gang violence, dangerous drug abuse, and any other stereotypes. They are not acting what is seen as being or acting black. They also are not kind of black or acting white.
They have their own identities. They are also just not dealing with race issues where there is not a lead white person and they are harmed in any way on the show. The main character does have baggage from his life while it was growing up but the show is about him seeing that his brother is a good person and you can love someone regardless of the race of that person. Putting this show on a channel that is not exclusively for black people gives access to anyone who wants to watch it.
My show is making fun of shows that have mostly white cast members. In some way, I feel like it is derivative. This is in the sense that it is a show the represents one person from another racial group. I am modeling my show after others that do this to send a message to viewers. This is that there is an imbalance of represented people on television. My show is based on the relationship of a black and white man but it is intended to remind us that many people of many varying colors, sexes, genders, abilities, sizes, and backgrounds are neglected in media.
