I wanted to start a "Pass the Pig" type of program in the village that I was working in. "Pass the Pig" is a term for a certain type of community project. This is typically done in a small rural community that lacks economic resources. The idea, in a nutshell, is providing one pig to a farmer or someone who can take care of it. This pig has offspring then these offspring are divided amongst other community members. The more piglets that are birthed from the first mother is continuously divided amongst more and more community members. In turn community members who have a pig or depending on the number of resources pigs divide their bounty for other community members. Now if a community member say has four to five pigs down the line. One would be used to pass on, one is kept to eat, one can be sold and the other two would be kept for breeding. This project would provide food as well as financial sustainability. I wanted to do this type of project but with orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. They grow big, fast, are cheap and an initial in combating childhood malnutrition. I needed to gather people to start this project. The first participate of this project were local institutions. These included the local high school, elementary school, hospital, and Agricultural Department. With these groups chiefs from the surrounding communities were notified of this project. A meeting was arranged to speak to representatives of each institution including the local chiefs. I had asked them to keep track of who they would choose to participate in this project. The process was explained. I had mentioned that I would monitor the process over the next view months. During the meeting, I had a translator to speak in the local language and I had used chart paper for information on orange-fleshed sweet potatoes and had provided reading material over their importance. The best way to end a project like this is with if possible a demonstration of some kind.
